Exodus 35:1 – 40:33
August 24, 2008
Pursue God’s presence with all your heart
I. God’s promised presence (Exodus 25:8)
• God has redeemed us to dwell among us (Exodus 29:46)
• As seen in Christ (John 1:14, 2 Cor. 4:6)
• As manifested in His church (Acts 2:2-4, 1 Cor. 3:16, Eph. 2:22)
II. Pursue with all your heart (Exodus 35:1 – 36:7)
• By obeying God’s Word (John 14:23)
• By giving to God’s work (Don’t hold back!)
III. For God’s glory (Exodus 33:16)
Application Questions
1. Do you want to experience God’s presence? Why or why not?
2. Are you pursuing God’s presence? (on Sundays, in homegroup, at home, at work . . .) If so, how?
3. How is God “stirring your heart” (Ex. 35:21, 26, 29)? How has He equipped you to fulfill His
purpose, experience His presence, & display His glory in and through the church? (Ex. 35:30 –
36:2)
4. Are you holding back from God (finances, time, service . . .)? If so, what needs to change?</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>“Understanding the Covenant”
Exodus 32 “The Golden Calf”

Exodus 32: 7-11 (ESV)
7 And the LORD said to Moses, “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the
land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I
commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and
sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of
Egypt!’” 9 And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked
people. 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may
consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you.”

The foundation of God’s covenant is in His inexhaustible Grace.

• God hears the cries of Israel
• God calls Moses as the deliverer of his people.
• God liberates his people from bondage
• God leads the people to Mount Sinai
• God confirms and secures the covenant He made with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob.
• God comes down on Mount Sinai and speaks to them from Heaven.
• God promises to Israel that if they obey Him and keep His covenant they will be His
special possession, a kingdom of priest, and a holy nation.
• And Israel response to all this is “All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do.”

The Sin of Israel: Exodus 32: 1-6 (ESV)

1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people
gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before
us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what
has become of him.” 2 So Aaron said to them, “Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of
your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off
the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 And he received the gold
from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said,
“These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron
saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be
a feast to the LORD.” 6 And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and
brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
God’s Response to Sin: Exodus 32:10 God responds. 10 Now therefore let me alone, that
my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great
nation of you.”

• God declares His righteous judgment on the people and their sin.
• God provides a Mediator.

The Mediation of God’s Mediator: Exodus 32:13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and
Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your
offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your
offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14 And the LORD relented from the disaster that he
had spoken of bringing on his people.

• The very same covenantal grace with which God established his covenant with
Abraham, and which we now enjoy in Christ is the foundation of Moses’
appeal to God. Moses was saying Lord remember Your Covenant.
Conclusion: Exodus 32: 30-32
30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to
the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” 31 So Moses returned to the LORD and
said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold.
32 But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you
have written.”

GREATER INTERCESSOR, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>Rules of the Covenant
Exodus 30:11-31:18

God saves us, sanctifies us, and sets us apart to serve His purposes.

1. God saves us (30:11-16).

Here we have the picture of Christ ransoming us from the bondage of sin and atoning
for our sins before a holy God.

2. God sanctifies us (30:17-21).

The term sanctification or to sanctify means to make us more and more like Christ;
this is what the bronze wash basin represents.

3. God sets us apart to serve His purposes ((30:22-31:11).

We are anointed and set apart by the holy oil and incense (30:22-38).
We are skilled and filled to build God’s house (31:1-11).
God has skilled us and filled us for service in His church.

4. God seals the rules of the covenant with the reality of the Sabbath (31:12-17).

What marks us out as God’s people is that we rest from our works and trust in
Christ’s work alone for our acceptance from God.

Conclusion and Application

We are justified and sanctified in Christ. God makes us holy by setting us apart for His
use so that we no longer live for ourselves but for Him who died for us and was raised
from the dead.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died
for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer
live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

1. How can you rest from your works and trust Christ alone in your situation?
2. What gift has God given you to build the church?
3. How are you seeking to develop and employ that gift?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Represent God to man and man to God</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>The Way into the Holiest Place
Exodus 28:1-30:10

Represent God to man and man to God.

Six times in our text we read that God called Aaron and his sons to serve Him as priests
or for His priesthood:

28:1 “Then bring near to you Aaron and his sons…to serve me as priests.”
28:3b “…make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood.”
28:4 “They shall make holy garments for Aaron and his sons…to serve me as
priests.”
28:41 “And you shall put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and
shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve me as
priests.”
29:1a “Now this is what you shall do to them to consecrate them, that they may serve
me as priests…”
29:44b “Aaron also and his sons I will consecrate to serve me as priests.”

1. God consecrates us to be his priests.

a. God clothed Aaron and his sons to consecrate them as His priests.

• Ephod (28:6-14)
We are called to bear men’s names before God.

• Breastpiece of Judgment (28:15-30)
We are called to carry folks on our hearts before God. We are called to bear
their judgment as a burden on our souls. We are called to seek God for
guidance and instruction from His word for others.

• Robe (28:31-35)
We are clothed with the robes of Christ’s righteousness.

• Holy plate (28:36-38)
We are set apart, consecrated, made holy for God’s purpose.

• Tunic & Turban (28:39-41)

2. God anoints us and ordains us for His purposes to be His priests.

b. God consecrated Aaron and his sons with the righteousness they needed to be His
priests.

Exodus 29:44
44 I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar. Aaron also and his sons I will
consecrate to serve me as priests.

God consecrated Aaron and his sons with the atoning sacrifice (29:10-41)

c. God consecrates us to be His priests by clothing us with the garments of Christ’s
righteous life and cleansing us with the atoning sacrifice of Christ’s sacrificial
death (Hebrews 9:11-14).

2. God commissions us to be his priests.

a. God commissioned Aaron and his sons with His mission.

God met with His people in the tabernacle and Aaron was commissioned to
officiate at that meeting.

b. God commissions us to be his priests through His mission (2Corinthians 5:14-21).
God meets with man today in Christ and He commissions us to officiate at that
meeting.

We meet with God and hear from God in Christ, and He sends us out to represent
God to man and man to God through His gospel.

Summary and Appeal

God calls us to be His priests (Exodus 19:4-6; 1 Peter 2:9-10). How do we answer His
Call and consecrate ourselves as His priests representing God to man and man to God?

1. We make sure we know God through Christ – we must know and experience the
gospel on a personal level daily.
2. We carry people in our hearts to God in prayer.
3. We carry God in our lives and lips to people through our witness
4. We set ourselves apart or consecrate ourselves in Christ to this task.
5. We build the church where the truth about God resides.
6. We live for something bigger than ourselves, we for God’s purposes to dwell with
and speak to His people in Christ.</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>1
God Dwells with His People
Exodus 24:12-27:19
Cultivate the place where you meet with God and hear from Him.
The tabernacle and its courtyard was a moveable “tent of meeting” between God and
Israel in the wilderness.
1. The Ark of the Covenant
The Mercy Seat is the place where God met with His people and spoke to them.
Jesus entered the heavenly tabernacle and sprinkled the heavenly mercy seat with
His blood once and for all in order to grant us forgiveness of sins and access to
our Holy God. Christ is the place where we meet with God and hear from Him; in
Him we receive mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:14-16).
2. The Table of Show Bread
Jesus is the bread of life. The bread and wine we celebrate at communion is a
sign his covenant with us to God.
3. The Golden Lampstand
God’s Word is a light for us (Ps 119:105) and Jesus is God’s Word in human form
(Jn 1:1, 14) and thus He is the light of the world (Jn 8:12; 9:5; 12:46).
4. The Tabernacle Tent
5. The Veil
The veil separates the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies and it represents the
barrier between holy God and sinful man.
When Jesus died the veil in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Mt
27:51) symbolizing that in Christ our sins are atoned for and there is no longer a
separation between man and God! Jesus’ body is the veil through which we
approach God as we trust in His blood (Heb 10:19-20).
2
6. The Bronze Altar
Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (Heb 9:11-14) and He is the Lamb of
God who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29).
Summary - Appeal
Moses’ Tabernacle was the place for Israel to meet with God and hear from Him. It
pointed to Christ who is the place were we meet with God and hear from Him. In Christ,
God comes to dwell with us. The glory of God dwells with man in Christ!
Is He dwelling with you this morning? Do you know his forgiveness and mercy? Do you
know His word and light? Do you know His glory?
At the very moment that Christ died on the cross the Temple Veil separating God from
man was ripped in two. Now in Christ all who repent and place their trust in Him have a
place where they can meet with God and hear from Him.
This truth calls us to cultivate the place in Christ were we meet with God and hear from
Him. So how do we do that? Well it begins with repenting of our sins and believing the
gospel truths about Christ and it continues with the following practices:
1. We believe the gospel truth that Christ’s righteousness alone is the basis for our
relationship with God; we put our confidence in Christ!!
2. We draw near to God through the spiritual disciplines of reading God’s word,
praying, worshipping God in corporate gatherings, giving our finances to Him,
building the church through faithful service, building the church through biblical
fellowship and relational reality in our home groups.
3. We respond to this message with joyful repentance where appropriate and faithful
application.</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>Ratification of the Covenant
Exodus 24:1-11
As God's people, obey God's commands by receiving God's grace
I. Obey God's commands
  Commit - to obedience (Exodus 24:3; 19:8)
II. By receiving God's grace
Confess – your sin and (continual) need for a Savior
• The law reveals sin (Romans 3:19-20; Romans 4:15)
• The covenant ceremony reveals our sinfulness & need for a Savior
(Exodus 24:4-8; Hebrews 9:12-15)
  Come - to God (Exodus 24:1, 9-11)
v.11….and they saw God, and they ate and drank.
Application Questions
1. In what area of your life do you feel like you need to earn God’s favor or
prove your worthiness before Him? How would your life be different if you
were to obey God as a response to His grace rather than as an attempt to
earn His grace?
2. Do you believe that you somehow need to pay God back for the grace He
has shown you? Is this possible? What is the fruit of such thinking?
3. John Piper states, "Faith in future grace . . . is the source of radical, risktaking,
kingdom-seeking obedience." Does that describe you? If not, what’s
holding you back?
4. Have you experienced what it means to serve God with faith-filled
obedience and joy? How does a picture of God’s splendor and “table
fellowship” encourage you to come to Him and obey (Exodus 24:9-11)?</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>The Book of the Covenant
Exodus 21:1 - 23:33

Introduction to the Old Testament Law:

1. How are we to interpret God's Old Testament law as New Testament believers?
(With the gospel of Jesus Christ in view.)
2. Why do we need to know about God's Old Testament law as Christians? (To
gain a fuller understanding of the gospel.)
3. How are we to apply the Old Testament law as Christians? (Very carefully!)
As God's people . . . embrace God's law as God's grace to you

I. God’s Grace
In Exodus, the law is given to those who have already experienced the grace of
God in salvation. It is not the basis upon which they will be saved. The law was
never meant to save us! God had another (better) intent!

II. Teaches us

a. What it means to be the people of God (loyalty)
To be the people of God (to be in covenant with God) requires whole-hearted
and whole-life obedience as a response to his grace. The Lord demands
entrance into every area of your life.

b. What it means to please God (holiness)
"At Sinai, God spells out for his people what it means to be the people of God .
. . What he does tell them reflects in various ways his own character. It is their
faithful response to the character of God that will demonstrate that they are
his children (Goldsworthy).”
• God is holy (Exodus 22:31)
• God is concerned about justice (Exodus 21:23-25; 22:7-9).
• God is merciful & compassionate (Exodus 22:21-27)
ESV Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD
require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with
your God?

III. Leads Us to Christ
NAU Galatians 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the
law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the
Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

a. Who fulfilled the Law
ESV Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the
Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
• We are credited with Christ's obedience (1 Corinthians 1:30; Philippians 3:9)
• We receive the blessings that come from Christ's obedience (Exodus 23:20-
32)

b. Who enables us to please God
ESV Jeremiah 31:33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of
Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I
will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
(c/r Hebrews 8:6-13)
• We are freed to love God and love our neighbor - the very heart of the
Book of the Covenant and the law as seen in Matthew 22:36-40. (Romans
3:25-26; Matthew 5:38-42)

Application Questions:
1. Does whole-hearted and whole-life obedience to God’s Word describe your
life? How have you “compartmentalized” God or in what areas of your life
have you refused Him ready access?
2. How does you life reflect God’s holiness? Is the way you treat your family,
friends, neighbors, co-workers . . . distinguish you from the world?
3. In your personal relationships, do you feel like you need to be the enforcer of
justice? Are you willing to be wronged and show mercy based on the mercy
you have received and the justice that has been satisfied at the cross?

      <itunes:summary>1
God’s Covenant People
Exodus 19:1-25
God is holy and we should obey His voice.
1. God is holy
God’s holiness is defined as His transcendence. In other words, God is different from
us, set apart from us, and far above us in every way. When God chooses a people, he
makes them holy or sets them apart as His own possession. He does this by making a
covenant with them; it is the covenant which God made with Israel that the rest of the
book of Exodus describes.
God’s covenant faithfulness
God bore Israel on eagle’s wings and brought them to Himself (adoption).
God called Israel His own, if they would obey his voice and keep his
commandments (covenant).
God promised to make Israel a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (covenantal
purpose).
God met His people on His Mountain (worship).
2
2. We should obey God’s voice
Our covenant responsibility
We are a holy nation set apart for God’s purposes.
We are an obedient people who do God’s will.
We are a worshipping people who meet with our God.
Hebrews 12:18-24 (ESV)
18 For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and
gloom and a tempest 19 and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made
the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. 20 For they could not
endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be
stoned.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with
fear.” 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the
heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the
assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all,
and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a
new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood
of Abel.
Mt. Sinai is transformed into Mt. Zion by Jesus Christ, The Mediator of a better
covenant in His blood.

Jethro’s Visit - Exodus 18:1-27

God calls us to praise, worship, and serve Him.

1. To praise God we must remember His Word (1-9)

Jethro reminds Moses of who God is

Moses reveals to Jethro what God did for Israel

Jethro teaches us to praise God for who He is and what He does.

2. To worship God we must respond to His Word in covenantal sacrifice (10-12)

Jethro responds to Moses’ report about God with worship.

Jethro teaches us to worship God in response to His redemptive deeds.

3. To serve God we must understand and apply His Word in community (13-27)

Moses makes God’s laws and statutes known to Israel; this is the primary way a leader serves God’s people. He brings God’s word to them along with discernment in how to apply it.

“The task of Moses was not to innovate but to teach/warn the people by throwing light on what the Lord had revealed.” Motyer
Moses is to choose these men who will become gifts to God’s people; the gift of leaders to care for God’s people. These men are to be capable, spiritual, honest and loyal.

Moses teaches us to diligently apply God’s word.

2

Application

Are you committed to diligent application of God’s word in your life? Do you love God’s word and joyfully read it, attend Sunday mornings ready to hear it preached, and do you anticipate with faith Wednesday night Home Groups where you can apply it in community?

1. When do you take the time to remember who God is and what He has done?

2. What is your practice in private and public worship? Is it a priority to you?

3. Who are you discipling with God’s Word? Husbands are you discipling your wife
and children?

4. Who is discipling you with God’s Word? Wives and children do you look to your
husbands and fathers as your primary means of discipleship?</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>The Bitter Waters of Unbelief
Exodus 15:22 – 17:7

May 25, 2008

Do not test God, but trust God

I. Do not test God.

God does the testing. We do the trusting. (Exodus 15:25-26; 16:4).

a. We test God by grumbling or quarreling

ESV Exodus 17:7 And he called the name of the place Massah [Testing] and Meribah
[Quarreling], because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the
LORD . . .

It is ultimately God at whom we are grumbling (Exodus 16:8) or with whom we are quarreling
(Exodus 17:2).

b. Grumbling or quarreling is unbelief
  Doubting God’s provision (Psalm 78:17-20)
  Doubting God’s character (Exodus 16:3; 17:3)
  Doubting God’s presence (Exodus 17:7)

Warning! (Hebrews 4:15-19)

“Testing God involves putting him on probation, withholding trust pending evidence. For the
Israelites it meant doubting whether he who had proved sufficient in the past was still sufficient,
now that things had taken a different turn (Motyer).”

II. Trust & Obey God

For in Christ….

a. He has delivered us.

ESV Psalm 78:35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their
redeemer.

ESV Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not
also with him graciously give us all things?

b. He has provided for us

God's physical provision in the desert (Old Testament) points to our spiritual provision in

Christ (New Testament).

Christ is the Bread of Life (John 6:35, 49-51)

Christ is the Rock & Living Water (1 Corinthians 10:1-4, John 7:37-38)

c. He has passed the test for us.

Christ passed the test in the wilderness which we have failed (Matthew 4:1-11)

ESV Hebrews 4: 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the
heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high
priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been
tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of
grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. [underline added]

Application Questions

1. How are you being tested right now?
2. Are you grumbling? If so, what lies are you believing about God, yourself, or others?
3. Are you testing God, withholding trust, or putting him on “probation” in any area of your life?
(See Motyer quote). If so, be specific, repent, and rehearse such gospel truths as Romans 8:32.
4. Do you believe that God has provided all you need to follow and to please Him? What would
your actions say?</itunes:summary>

Obey God's commandments as God's grace to you.
I. God's grace to you
a. God's words
Exodus 20:1 And God spoke all these words, saying,
b. God's character
  Exodus 20:2a "I am the LORD your God . . ."
c. God's deliverance
Exodus 20:2b who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
II. Obey God's commands
a. With all your heart
Matthew 22: 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first
commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."
Intensively - In thought, word, and deed
1. Love God (heart)
Thoughts (1-2): Have no other gods, no idols
Words (3): Don't take the name of the LORD in vain
  Deeds (4): Remember the Sabbath
• Honor your father and mother (5)
2. Love Your Neighbor (heart)
 Deeds (6-8): Don't murder, commit adultery, nor steal
 Words (9): Don't lie
 Thoughts (10): Don't covet
Extensively - God, family, society (world)
If you get the vertical relationship right (with God), you will get the horizontal
relationship right (with your neighbor)
Vertical relationship (commandments)
1.
2.
3.
4.
(5).
b. With a new heart
Jeremiah 31:31 "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make
a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the
covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to
bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their
husband, declares the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the
house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them,
and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my
people.
That day has come in Christ Jesus!
We have received a new nature which has been fashioned for obedience! Are you
living like it?
Application Questions
1. Do you view God’s revealed will (commandments) as God’s grace or a burden? Why?
2. What commandment(s) did the Holy Spirit convict you of violating or taking too lightly?
How can you change?
3. “What is grace? It is that marvelous gift of God which, having delivered a man from the curse of
the law, enables him to keep it and to be righteous as Christ was righteous, for he kept the law
perfectly (Martyn Lloyd-Jones).”
Have you experienced this grace? If so, how? If not, what must you do?</itunes:summary>

1. Believe God for past, present, and future acts of redemption.
Moses believed God for what He had done for Israel (15:1-12).

Exodus 15:1 (ESV)
1 Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD, saying, “I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

Moses believed God for what He would do for Israel (15:13-18)

“The first half of the hymn described Yahweh’s victory. Now v.13 interprets this event in relation to Israel. It was through this event that Israel was redeemed to become the people of God…The movement of the poem from the deliverance at the sea to the land interprets the significance of Yahweh’s redemptive intervention. He not only redeems a people for himself, but he leads them into his land…Yahweh brings them in, plants them on his mountain from where he rules his kingdom…the poem does not end by defining Israel’s role in the land, but rather by reflecting Israel’s function as the worshipping community.” Childs (251, 252)

Miriam believed God for what He had done for Israel (15:20-21)

Exodus 15:21 (ESV)
21 And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Do you regularly trust in the Lord to deliver you from your enemies?

2
2. Sing to the Lord for He is your strength and song, and He has become your salvation. Israel was weak, in distress, and helpless before a superior enemy; but, God was their strength and song, and He became their salvation! Like Israel, we are weak, in distress, and helpless before a superior enemy. But, God is our strength and song, and He has become our salvation in Christ!! We must sing today of what God has done for us in Christ. The content of our song of praise is found in Revelation 15.

Revelation 15:1-4 (ESV)
1 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished. 2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have
been revealed.”

Is the Lord your strength and song; has He become your salvation?

Application

1. List 5 things God has done for you.

2. Would others characterize you as one who peacefully trusts in the Lord or anxiously trusts in yourself? In other words… Are you more God-sufficient or self-sufficient?

3. Do you regularly worship the Lord in song? If so, describe your practice and if not tell us why not.

4. What one thing can you change in your daily schedule in order to practice regular worship of God in song?</itunes:summary>

Exodus 13:3-16

NIV Exodus 12:17 "Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because it was
on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day
as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. [underline added]

ESV Exodus 13: 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the
seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD.

As Christians, we are called to celebrate God's deliverance (the gospel).

I. What do we celebrate? (Exodus 13:3, 8, 14]

We celebrate what God has done for us through Jesus Christ in delivering us
from the penalty, power, and pollution of sin. We celebrate the gospel!

II. How do we celebrate?

a. By remembering the gospel – i.e., intentionally bringing to mind & recalling
the gospel.

b. By living the gospel – living according to our new nature.
In the New Testament, leaven is often used as a metaphor for evil and its
corrupting influence (Matthew 16:6, Luke 12:1)

ESV 1 Corinthians 5: 8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old
leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of
sincerity and truth. [underline added]
We celebrate the Feast today by rehearsing, proclaiming, and living out the
gospel truths in our fight against sin and evil.

III. Why do we celebrate?

Because we are sinners! Because we forget the gospel!
Celebrating the Feast was a means to “guard” hearts and minds against the
corrupting influences of the surrounding culture (Exodus 13:4, 5)
Celebrating the Feast was a means to “preserve” or perpetuate the good
news of God’s mighty deliverance (Exodus 13:8, 14).

Celebrating the gospel should be a seven days per week endeavor! (Exodus
13:9)

Application Questions

1. How can you celebrate the gospel in your home and on a daily basis?

2. How does the call to celebrate the gospel inform your understanding of the
church? Sunday mornings? Homegroups? Church discipline?</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>The Sign of the Covenant
Cross-Centered Living in a Self-Centered World

Commemorate God’s deliverance and consecrate yourself to Him.

God delivered Israel from Egypt
God constituted Israel as a nation by delivering them from Egypt. He passed over
Israel’s first born by the blood of the sacrificial lamb.

COMMEMORATE GOD'S DELIVERANCE
The Passover meal was made a statute for all generations to remember God’s
deliverance through the blood of the lamb.

The Passover meal foreshadows communion. At communion we remember “why?”
God passed over sins. And the answer to why He passed over our sins is that He did
not pass over His Son. At the cross, God’s mercy and judgment meet; mercy for
those who do not deserve it and judgment for the Lamb of God who takes our sin.

CONSECRATE YOURSELF TO GOD

“The firstborn sons of the Israelites…belonged to God... they must be redeemed. A
price had to be paid for them, to buy back their lives…[But] why were the firstborn
lambs and bulls always set apart for sacrifice? Why did the firstborn donkeys and
camels have to be bought back with a price [as well]? Didn’t these animals belong to
the Israelites? [N]o they belonged to God.” Ganz

We belong to God by virtue of creation and a price had to be paid to buy us back to
Him. Jesus’ life, death and resurrection paid the price of our redemption back to the
Father. Jesus took the wrath of God we so richly deserved so that we might be
delivered from death and hell. Since Jesus paid that price for us, we no longer live for
ourselves, but for Him who died for us!

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (ESV)
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has
died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might
no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

APPLICATION
1. We commemorate God’s deliverance by remembering Christ’s ransom of us.

Mark 10:45 (ESV), For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many.”

1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV), knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your
forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious
blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

2. We consecrate ourselves to God by dying to our rights in order to live for Him who
died for us.

“How can we stand beside the cross and insist on our rights?” D.A Carson The Cross
and Christian Ministry

Matthew 16:24-27 (ESV), Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself
and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he
gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his
life? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father,
and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

What rights would God be calling you to give up for the sake of advancing the
gospel?

What do you need to lose in order to gain what really matters?

Lord we want to live for Your glory rather than our gain! Let us seek to gain that which
no man can take, let us seek that which is of Eternal value! Lord stamp eternity on our
eyes!</itunes:summary>

      <itunes:summary>The Lord’s Passover - Exodus 12:1-42
March 16, 2008

Exodus 12:13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see
the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land
of Egypt.

The Passover is a prophetic (gospel) event! It should cause us to reflect, remember, and revel in
God’s grace.

Trust in the blood of Christ, the Passover Lamb.

I. Which Delivers Us from God’s wrath

a. The human need

"[W]hen Yahweh entered Egypt as absolute Lord and Judge, Israel's problem was no longer
how to escape Pharaoh but how to be safe before such a God (Motyer).”

b. The divine provision

Blood symbolizes the life of a victim (Leviticus 17:11). The lamb or “victim” became a
substitute for the firstborn son, dying in his place.

1 Corinthians 5:7b For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

c. Our response

We must take a stand as the self-declared people of God, under the blood of the lamb.

II. Which Distinguishes Us as God’s People

III. Conclusion

Exodus 12:13 The blood shall be a sign for you (emphasis added)

Communion (Luke 22:15-20)

Application Questions

1. Do you view communion as a time of commemoration and celebration? How does the
Passover event in Exodus help inform or enrich your participation in the Lord’s Supper?

2. How is Christ the fulfillment of Passover? Why is the coming (and return) of Christ
sometimes called the “new exodus”?

3. What distinguishes you from non-believers? Do they see a grateful heart? Do they see
God’s power & favor manifested in your life and/or household? Do they know who your
Lord (master) is?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>He is God and there is none other; obey Him!</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>1. The Lord, He is God

Exodus 5:2
2 But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go?
I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”

Exodus 7:17
Thus says the LORD, “By this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, with the
staff that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the Nile, and it shall turn into
blood.

“Water turning into blood may have been in one sense, the lightest of the plagues, but
in Egyptian terms it was loaded with significance. It was a direct challenge to the
Nile god. If Pharaoh was aware at all of the history of Moses (as we are), he would
have observed the man who had been saved from the power of the Nile now claiming
power over the Nile.” J.A. Motyer

God is the One who hardened Pharaoh’s heart. Exodus 4:21-23

21 And the LORD said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before
Pharaoh all the miracles that I have put in your power. But I will harden his heart, so
that he will not let the people go. 22 Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the
LORD, Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I say to you, “Let my son go that he may serve
me.” If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son.’ ”
Why did God harden Pharaoh’s heart?

Romans 9:14-18
14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15 For he
says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion
on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but
on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose
I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be
proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he
hardens whomever he wills.

2. There is no other god like our God

Exodus 8:10 And he said, “Tomorrow.” Moses said, “Be it as you say, so that you
may know that there is no one like the LORD our God.

Exodus 9:14
14 For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself, and on your servants and
your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth.
There is no other god like our God and our God is merciful.

Exodus 9:19
19 Now therefore send, get your livestock and all that you have in the field into safe
shelter, for every man and beast that is in the field and is not brought home will die
when the hail falls on them.” ’ ”

Exodus 33:19 And he (God) said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you
(Moses) and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to
whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

Romans 9:15-16 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on
human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

3. God commands us to obey Him because He alone is God & He is faithful!

Exodus 7:10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD
commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it
became a serpent.

Exodus 7:16 And you shall say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, sent me
to you, saying, “Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness. But so
far, you have not obeyed.”

God informs Pharaoh that Israel belongs to Him and not to Pharaoh. He then
commands Pharaoh to let His people go and serve Him.

In the tenth plague God announces to Pharaoh that he will kill his first born, because
Pharaoh refuses to release God’s first born.

Exodus 4:21-23 (ESV)
Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the
LORD, Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I say to you, “Let my son go that he may serve
me.” If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son.’ ”</itunes:summary>

Text: Philippians 2:1-11

A church is a community of people saved by the gospel and being built together to proclaim the gospel. However, as life is lived out in the local church, the threat to unity is ever present. In the passage we are considering, the apostle Paul addresses the subject of unity and disunity and we will seek to learn from his words by considering the following 3 questions:

1. What is the basis for our unity? vv. 1-2

Our shared life in Christ is the basis for our unity.

2. What is the primary problem behind disunity? – vv. 3-4

Pride is the primary problem behind disunity.

3. What is the divine solution for disunity? – vv. 6-11

Christ’s example of humility is the divine solution for disunity.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Bow down and worship God for His deliverance in Christ</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>1. God’s Deliverer Sent to Deliver God’s People
Exodus 3:1-4:31

Bow down and worship God for His deliverance in Christ.

1. God initiates our deliverance (Exodus 2:23-25)

God led His people into Egypt and…
  He heard their groans
He remembered His covenant with them
  He saw their afflictions
He entered into a covenant relationship with them (knew His people)

2. God reveals Himself to us as our deliverer (Exodus 3:1-4:28) Tell them I Am sent you…

God Himself appears to Moses in such a way that he does not kill him, but condescends to speak with him. Many feel this is a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, who being fully God, comes in a form that can dwell with man and make God’s merciful deliverance a reality. “In a word, there is that in the nature of God which banishes and endangers sinners…holiness is where the Lord is, and unassisted humankind cannot approach him…Holiness endangers the sinner because the holiness of the Lord is not a passive attribute but an active force, embracing all that conforms to it and destroying all that offends. The trepidation humans feel before the Lord is…the fear of sinners endangered by holiness (Isa. 6:3-5). The biblical symbol of this perilous force of holiness is fire, and it pervades the book of Exodus (13:21; 14:19; 19:18; 33:10; 40:38). It starts with the fire in the bush (3:2) and ends with the fire on the mountain (19:18), and in each case the fire is linked with the separateness of the divine and the exclusion of the human as endangered.” Motyer

God reveals Himself to Moses as the God of his father, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses responds by hiding his face out of fear of looking at God. This is covenant language and it signals God’ purpose to fulfill His covenant with His people, the covenant he made with Abraham. Moses anticipated that the people of Israel asking him God’s name after he declared to them that the God of their fathers (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) sent him to deliver them.

2. God reveals Himself further as I AM WHO I AM and tells Moses to inform the people of Israel that I Am has sent you.

“The link between the divine name and the Hebrew verb “to be” is the plainest feature of this passage. This is what Durham calls the ‘is-ness’ of the God of Israel. In every place, at every point of time, in every circumstance or need, he ‘is’…Hebrew has only one verb for both meanings, Yahwah, but unquestionably this verb leans strongly in the direction of ‘active presence’. The old hymn which proclaimed ‘God is here-and that to bless us’ caught the sense exactly. The presence of this God is not, therefore, a bare ‘is’ but a living force, vital and personal. In no situation is he an ornamental extra; in every situation he is the key active ingredient.” Motyer

In the face of Moses’ inadequacy, God says, I am adequate, I AM WHO I AM, trust me for I am with you, I Am the Almighty Lord! Christ is the great I AM (John 8:58) who is with us and who sends us out to declare His gospel message of deliverance from God’s wrath through His life, death and resurrection. So, we go in confidence that the great I Am is with us!!

3. God’s people respond to God’s self revelation as their Deliverer (Exodus 4:29-31)

The people of Israel believed God and bowed down to worship Him!

Moses is a type of Christ, and Christ is the ultimate deliverer to whom Moses was pointing. Christ came at God’s appointed time to deliver God’s people from God’s wrath.

Galatians 4:4-5 (ESV) 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Christ sees and hears our groans; Christ is our deliverer. It is Christ who reveals the Father to us and calls us to worship Him!!

<itunes:summary>God’s People in Need of God’s Deliverance

Exodus 1:1-2:25 Exodus 2:23-25 (ESV) 23 During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.

Trust in God who delivered Israel and will deliver you according to His plan.

Why we trust God 1. God is faithful to His plan. 2. God cares for the people of His plan. 3. God delivers His people according to His plan. 4. God hears the cries of His people, He sees and knows.

How we trust God 1. By remembering His past deeds of deliverance. 2. By discerning His present hidden hand. 3. By crying out to Him in prayer. 4. By waiting for Him in patience.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>The story of Exodus is the story of the Bible</itunes:subtitle>
      <itunes:summary>Exodus: The Big Picture (Introduction)

Author: Moses (wrote the first five books of the Old Testament called the “Pentateuch”)

Date: 13th (-) 15th century B.C.

Outline:
I. The Exodus (chapters 1-18)
II. The Law (chapters 19-24)
III. The Tabernacle (chapters 25-40)

Key (Memory) Verse:
ESV Exodus 19:5-6 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation…

I. How to Read Exodus
a. Read Exodus as a story.
Exodus is a narrative. It’s a story of promise and fulfillment. It’s a continuing story that fits into a much bigger story. It’s an epic battle that started in Genesis and is carried forth throughout the pages of the Bible.

Exodus 6:2-8 is the key to understanding the story of Exodus.

ESV Exodus 6:6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to
you for a possession. I am the LORD.'"

"Exodus is a story of the lengths to which God is willing to go to create for himself a people, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, through whom his plan of universal blessing, promised to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 will one day be realized (Dictionary of Biblical Theology).”

This story is our story. The church is a part of this story!

ESV 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people forhis own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

b. Read Exodus as theology.

Exodus informs our view of God and man - and how we are to relate to God. It shows us
our need for the gospel.

• God is sovereign
• God is holy
• Man is sinful
• God is merciful
Read Exodus 34:6-7
c. Read Exodus as a Christian!

“In doing biblical theology as Christians, we do not start in Genesis 1 and work our way forward until we discover where it is all leading. Rather we first come to Christ, and he directs us to study the Old Testament in the light of the gospel (Goldsworthy).”

Jesus taught that the Old Testament is God’s Word about Christ (Luke 24:27,44; John 5:39) ESV Luke 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Jesus is our deliverer (Luke 4)
Jesus is the Passover lamb (John 1:29, 1 Cor. 5:7)
Jesus is the manna from heaven (John 6:25-40).
Jesus is the tabernacle (John 1:14)
Jesus is greater than Moses (Heb 3:1-6).
Jesus is the great I AM (John 8:58)

Exodus is ultimately a proclamation of the gospel! Its gospel theme can be stated as: God is committed to saving and creating a people for His own glory.

II. How to summarize Exodus
a. God Saves a People (chapters 1-18)
b. God Creates a People (chapters 19-40)
1. Who are Given God's Law (19-24) – Covenant
2. Who are Given God's Presence (25-40) – Tabernacle</itunes:summary>
