An Impossible Mission

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were way over your head? I spent a Summer during college as an intern at NASA, assigned to a team working on Mars colonization. Most days I just wrote down acronyms I didn't understand, hoping I wouldn't accidentally send future astronauts to the wrong planet!

That feeling of inadequacy? It's exactly how many of us feel when we hear Jesus' command to "make disciples of all nations." Whether it's sharing your faith with family members at Thanksgiving dinner or teaching your children about Jesus, the mission can feel overwhelming.

But here's the good news: Jesus doesn't just give us an impossible mission - He empowers us to accomplish it. Here are three transformative truths about how Jesus empowers ordinary people for this extraordinary calling:

He Uses the Inadequate

When Jesus first gave this mission, some of his disciples worshipped him while others hesitated. These were the same followers who had abandoned him at his crucifixion. Yet Jesus didn't dismiss the doubters or wait for them to get their act together. Instead, he drew near to all of them - the confident and the hesitant alike - and commissioned them together.

Your inadequacy isn't an obstacle to the mission - it's a prerequisite. Jesus delights in using ordinary, weak, and even doubting people to advance his kingdom. Why? So that when lives are transformed, everyone knows it was His power at work, not our capability.

He Commands the Impossible

There are approximately 8 billion people on our planet, with 3.4 billion in unreached people groups who have never heard the gospel. Jesus commands us to make disciples of all of them - from the people living in tents under Miami's bridges to those in beachfront high-rises.

This mission is too big for any individual or single church. That's why at Palm Vista, we're committed to planting churches and partnering with networks of churches both locally and globally. We believe every member has a vital role to play - whether it's sharing Christ with a coworker, mentoring a younger believer, or being sent as a missionary to unreached peoples.

He Promises the Incredible

Here's what makes this impossible mission possible: Jesus promises, "I am with you always, to the end of the age." Not just when we're obedient. Not just when we have the right words. Always.

This promise isn't just for super-Christians or professional ministers. It's for every believer who steps out in faith to share Christ's love with others. When you feel inadequate (and you will), when the task seems impossible (and it does), Jesus himself is with you.
